Differentiating the Days

Hi Paddy,

It’s good to hear from you! I enjoyed solving your puzzle. I reckon the answer is about 6200 days.

Talking of days, it’s that time of year again when the nights are drawing in. And what better way to celebrate the coming of winter that with a graph… a sinusoidal one no less:

I created the graph using a calendar website, ignoring all that British Summer Time nonsense to prevent unsightly “steps” from ruining the smooth trigonometric beauty of this plot… or something.

The summer and winter soltices (solstii?) are fairly easy to find. What I think is most interesting is that where we are now (day 290) is pretty much the steepest section of the graph – meaning that not only are the nights drawing in, but they’re drawing in at the fastest rate.

Sining off,

Alan
