Puzzle #17 – Floating Gold

goldspherecapAn eccentric millionaire wants you to fashion a floating gold sphere. The sphere must float in water and have walls that are 1 cm thick.

Questions:

1. What is the smallest radius required for the sphere be buoyant?

2. Would it be possible to build a metal sphere (of any wall thickness) that could float in air?

Hint:

Use Archimedes’ principle.
